South African copper producer Palabora Mining says the north hoisting winder at its Limpopo province mine will be out of action until at least the middle of next week due to tangled tail ropes. The Palabora winder has been out of service since the morning of May 13, when a small quantity of spillage from the skip loading station entered the shaft and resulted in the tangling of the ropes.
The new mining method, known as block caving, involves extracting rock below an ore body, letting the ore break under its own weight, and then hauling the ore back to the surface. Three years after the start of underground mining at Palabora, cracks grew in the wall of the pit until the northwest wall collapsed.
